Communication
Teacher to student, teacher to parent, and student to student conversations should reflect mutual love and respect
Responding constructively and providing feedback without condoning personal attacks or negative labels
Honoring Differences
Encouraging all students to speak or listen in whichever way feels comfortable to them
Condemn bullying in every form both in the academic environment and outside of it
Trust
Keeping promises and commitments to show reliability and love, especially from teachers to students
Encouraging vulnerability in the classroom where students feel comfortable to share fears or weaknesses
Environment of Love
Encourage students to support one another, especially when students are having a difficult time in class or at home
Make it clear to parents that their students needs are being met and that the student is loved and valued at school
Accountability
Teachers need to apologize for mistakes and wrongdoings as much as students need to apologize
Absolutely no tolerance for cheating in the classroom, students who violate this policy will receive consequences with gentleness, but with sternness
Honesty
Be transparent and open about grading criteria and expectations, and model truthfulness to students
Practice what you preach (e.g., if the policy is no food in class, don’t eat in class. If the policy is don’t interrupt when someone is speaking, don’t interrupt when someone is speaking)
Personal Development
Practice self-reflection and model to your students through regularly evaluating your actions, thoughts, and lessons
Celebrate student progress, and recognize and reward student achievement, no matter how small.
Mistakes
Cultivate a growth mindset and teach growth mindset to students as they learn to grow from their mistakes
Teach problem solving skills to guide students on how to fix mistakes and avoid repeating them
Curiosity
Promote inquiry-based learning and start lessons with questions that spark investigations
Create a wonder wall or question box that allows students to post questions they’re curious about
Collaboration
Use creative projects to let students collaborate with peers and show learning through art, music, storytelling, or design
Bring guest speakers in or do field trips to expose students to new ideas, careers, or perspectives
Tolerance of Discomfort
Normalize struggle and remind students that confusion and challenge are signs of growth, and learning
Model calm reactions and show patience to yourself when things don’t go as planned, because leading by example is imperative
Listening
Avoid interrupting others’ learning processes, listen to them before jumping in to solve or reexplain content, allow time for struggle!
Teach students to stick with tasks that are difficult or boring, and listen to their concerns or frustrations if they occur
